Thermowood is one of the most dimensionally stable woods for outdoor use, so it’s less likely than the other types of wood to shrink or swell when exposed to moisture. Thermowood endures all climates and weather conditions.

When customising your own Gardenvity wood-fired hot tub features, you get to choose between light or dark oak stain applied to the Thermowood cladding. During regular maintenance, you can decide whether to preserve the original color tone or allow it to age naturally.

To maintain the original surface colour of Thermowood, apply tinted or pigmented wood oil, wax, wood-protecting stain, varnish, or paint that includes a UV filter. Perform this task once or twice a year.

If you prefer the naturally weathered look of Thermowood, here’s the good news: you don’t need to perform any maintenance on it! Over time, it will naturally develop a greyish hue, as is typical of natural wood, while still retaining its inherent durability characteristics.

To revitalize the surface of discolored timber, you can wash it thoroughly, dry it completely, and re-coat. Use wood detergents and avoid high-pressure water so as not to affect the wood’s natural grain.

What is Thermowood?

Thermowood, also known as thermally modified timber, heat-treated wood, or thermal wood, is softwood that has undergone a thermal modification process. This process involves heating the wood to high temperatures, typically around 180-230 degrees Celsius, in a controlled environment without the presence of oxygen. The heat treatment alters the wood’s chemical and physical properties, resulting in improved dimensional stability, increased resistance to decay and insects, and enhanced durability.

Thermowood is known for its sustainability, as it is produced using only heat and steam, 100% free from chemicals and resins. This makes it versatile for various applications, including saunas and wood-fired hot tubs, offering exceptional durability and environmental friendliness.

What makes Thermowood better than other types of timber?

Manufacturers claim that Thermowood has a lifespan up to four times longer than regular wood. It exhibits superior resistance to cracking and warping compared to untreated wood, eliminating the need for preservatives or paint to safeguard it from weathering and pests. The maintenance required is primarily focused on preserving its initial coloration.

How long does Thermowood cladding last?

Thermowood is classified as class 2, indicating its durability. According to the Building Research Establishment Limited (BRE), this product is estimated to have a lifespan of approximately 30 years.

What is the maintenance of Thermowood?

If you want to preserve its original colour, you have stain it with pigmented wood oil, wax, varnish, or paint that includes a UV filter once or twice a year.

If you prefer to allow it to age naturally and develop a silver-grey hue, simply brush away loose materials and wash with water and a soft brush. It is not recommended to use pressure washing, as it may cause splintering.

Does the use of Thermowood affect the price of a wood-fired hot tub?

While it may be more expensive than untreated softwood, its superior longevity makes it a worthwhile investment that compensates for the price difference. Thermowood is generally cheaper than many hardwoods and other softwoods like Canadian Western Red Cedar. Its production process does not involve any chemicals, which helps keep the costs lower.

How is Thermowood made?

Thermowood is made through a thermal modification process that enhances the properties of the wood. The wood is treated with steam and heat, without the use of any chemicals. The temperature inside the thermal modification chamber gradually reaches 212°C, and the process can take up to 110 hours. Water is used to prevent the wood from burning during the treatment. After the process, the moisture content of the wood is reduced to around 4-7%, resulting in highly stable and durable Thermowood products.
